Welcome Everyone!

Have you ever noticed that virtually everything you put your time and energy into comes and goes? The career that you spent so many years building in time comes to its end. The children that you devoted endless hours raising, eventually grow up, leave home and have lives of their own. The physical body ages, despite how well you live or what measures you take. The friendships and relationships that you invest in, regardless of how long or meaningful, inevitably run their course.

Your thoughts and feelings come and go in this way as well.  In fact, some experts say you think over 40 thoughts a minute. A thought that had a hold of you barely an hour ago may now be all but forgotten. And yet, many people spend their time preoccupied by their thoughts and the feelings that go with them.

None of this is to minimize the importance of what you do or achieve. But the truth is the very nature of life is transient. Like driving along and looking out your car window, everything comes into view and eventually fades away.

But here’s a question: In the midst of all of this, is there something that remains, that is a constant in this sea of change?

Just Press Pause

Right now, go ahead and try this experiment.

Stop whatever you are doing.

Now press the pause button….and just be.

Become aware of what is happening right now. Notice your breathing, what it feels like to sit in your chair, the space around you. Take your time…. Just notice.

As you do this, there may be thoughts buzzing around your head. Let them buzz. The heart beats, the lungs breathe, the brain thinks. Let it…you don’t have to interfere. If a memory comes to the surface, notice that even if it’s clear, it doesn’t have the same impact as what is happening right now.

Notice too that there is a background to all of this activity. In this space there is a flow of breathing, there is sensation in the body, and there is a movement of energy that is alive now…and the nature of this never, ever changes. All of this, everything that is real, takes place in the space of this moment. It is in this space where everything is happening, even if you get distracted and don’t notice.

This life that you are lives only now, not in the past or future of your thoughts. This awareness doesn’t take practice or discipline; it doesn’t even take any effort. It’s just seeing what is here now…what is true.

So as you go about your day, remember to take a moment to press the pause button and just be. This is where your life is happening…in this present and oh-so-precious moment.

Until next time…
Be well!

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a powerful technique that heals trauma and optimizes well-being. I am truly honored that the International Journal of EMDR Practice and Research is publishing an article that I have written in the Winter 2012 issue.  On Friday, May 4, I will be conducting a workshop at the EMDR Regional Meeting based on the material of this article. As a certified EMDR practitioner, I am grateful for this powerful method of psychotherapy that makes such a positive difference in the lives of my clients.

My work with couples has taken on a new dimension with the integration of  Emotion Focused Couples Therapy. Studies have shown that this type of counseling, which helps couples address and heal problematic cycles in their relationship, has been found to have the highest degree of long-lasting success.

Many thanks for your referrals and your outstanding support of my practice!
